The Minister in charge of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has vowed to deal with the unacceptable fail rate recorded from the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) said in a statement on Wednesday, Thursday, 8, 2021, that 54.11 percent passed in mathematics when it announced the release of the 2021 WASSCE results.
With over 45 percent of the candidates who sat for the 2021 WASSCE failing Mathematics and English Language, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum says it is unacceptable.
According to the Education Minister, he has thought mathematics in school in the past and hence will not sit unconcerned after what has happened.
“Actually, the average is 60 percent, certain subjects [rate] went up, others dipped but if you put it on average it is still 60 percent. So, if you look at English for example, there was a dip, mathematics there was a dip but Integrated Science saw a huge jump and Social Studies saw an increase and so over all, the average is still 60 percent.
“I just want to assure you that Mathematics should not see a dip in my time as somebody who has taught mathematics. So we are going to look at what went wrong and what we can do, which school did so well, and then we are going to look at how best to ensure that we move up,” Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum told journalists in Parliament today.
Comparing the 54.11 percent pass in mathematics this year to the 65.71 percent from last year, it can be deduced that there has been an 11.6 decline.
Meanwhile, WACE has cancelled a total number of 1,339 subject results and 174 entire results in WASSCE due to various examination malpractices such as bringing foreign material including mobile phones into the examination hall, tearing off parts of question papers, and collusion.
In addition, the scripts of candidates from 194 schools in certain subjects have also been withheld and are being scrutinised.
