Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the opposition NDC has joined the chorus of Ghanaians calling on the Electoral Commission (EC) to reverse its decision to make the Ghana card the sole requirement for voter registration.

According to him, the EC is only deceiving Ghanaians of conducting a limited voter registration. He claims the EC is aiming to do a mass exercise using the Ghana card.

On the PM Express show, which was aired on Accra-based Joy News on Tuesday, August 9 monitored by Modernghana News, he stated that if the EC was truly planning a limited exercise, it would not have requested a change in the law.

“This whole idea of the EC trying to throw dust into the eyes of Ghanaians that the law is for limited registration is false.

“If the EC decides to change the register, and do limited or continuous registration, they do not have to change the law,” he stated.

General Mosquito stressed that “We are urging the committee to throw it out or add another document to it.”

This comes after the EC presented to Parliament a draft CI titled Public Elections (Registration of Voters) Regulations, 2021 to regulate voter registration.

The EC’s bill, if passed into law by Parliament will allow the Ghana Card as the sole requirement for eligible voters to register.

The decision to make the Ghana card the sole requirement for voters’ registration, according to the EC, was taken at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting with representatives of all political parties, in which the NDC was represented.

But the opposition has denied knowledge of the decision to use Ghana card for the 2024 elections.
